OK, so whoever thought entering the NPSCC 50Km offroad ride in July would be a good idea… well, I want to meet that person in a dark alley!
I turned up and was immediately concerned about the undertaking. Through sheer luck, I started on the front row and we were off. 9:40am start.
Foolishly I decided to keep pace with the lead pack so I could get away from the 500 people behind me… Did I say foolish… I meant down right stupid!
The pack turned out to be 3 guys who obviously did this sort of thing for fun as they soon sped ahead. Leaving me with 3 other guys who, whilst fast, didn’t look like they would be able to keep up the pace for long. I’ll stick with them, I thought.
I was wrong about the pace. After 10km we were still shooting along the footpath in top gear and my legs were starting to feel a bit tired.
Luckily, their legs were getting more tired so they were slowing. Again, in a flush of foolish bravado, I kept up the pace and went past them. I was now officially 4th with 12km gone.
Now we moved onto the road section and I slowed up a fair bit. So much so that a number of people overtook me. One was about 6 months old and wearing heavy jeans and dancing shoes! Slightly deflated, and now on the ‘up hill section’. Ouch, my legs were really hurting by 20Km marker. A short snack bar and luckily we were back onto level-ish road.
Moving into the woods (or was it mud… it had rained heavily the past few days) and I was into my element. Powering through the mud sections I was really enjoying the ride by now. I forgot my legs, the pain and the miles still to go and I was loving it.
At 35km-ish a waterstop. I decided to stop, and I probably should not have. However, the lady suggested that very few 50Km riders had passed so that gave me a boost of energy.
Pushing on and another 5Km of road which was actually easy at this stage.
The final 5Km was back on the footpath and I was surprised that it had an uphill climb! My legs were refusing to participate but, push by push I made it to the finish.
Very pleased with the time (2 hours 56 mins) and I am now more confident that I can do it. More challenges to come…. Bring it on!
