Rebranding

Well, I just thought I’d keep you posted about our rebranding. We have been in discussions with a fabulous marketing and PR company about a full rebrand and marketing campaign to increase the profile of Love From Henry and the Cuba ride.

A small snipet of one of the ideas is in the header…. just a taster. Hope you like it. I am thinking we are a few weeks away from a new website launch so keep watching.

Thanks

Fund Raising

I am aware that so far I have not approached anyone for sponsorship or fund raising. I really must get on with this, so I have taken the action to make an effort. As from this week I shall turn my attentions to fundraising and sponsorship.

If you (does anyone read this?) have any ideas of potential sponsorship areas then please leave a comment and I will look into it. I plan to email everyone I know, and ask they forward this on to everyone they know!

Comments are always welcome and helpful. Your support is required!

Many thanks, Barny.

Leigh Hill again

Not content with torturing myself last week with Leigh Hill, I decide I liked it so much, I’d have another go…. from the bottom again.

Something must be working as the climb on Saturday was not that bad. Only a short stop (chain came off) near the top and we went all the way up…. even the muddy parts!

After the lack of direction of last week we looked at the map. It certainly helped… although not completely! We planned a longer route and off we went. It had been raining so the ground was a bit wetter in places and a few of the steeper climbs I lost traction. We tried to find the waterfall but failed miserably. This is the 2nd time we have ridden past it thinking… "It must be here, right?" but failed to actually see it.

A little diversion along a footpath (yep, missed the turning) and we were back on track.

The final run back I decided the sign to Ockley must be the right way, rather than heading back to the car parks but I was wrong. We came out about 1/2 mile outside Ockley and had to ride back in on the main road which is never fun.

All in all, another fabulous ride and I didn’t suffer as much this time so I must be doing something right.

Total trip was around 30km. Very satisfying.

Cheers and thanks for following.

Riding up North now

Having lost my riding partner (David is still not able to ride after his operation) I have been stuttering a little with my training. I have found a few offroad trails around the house but they are all rather flat, but at least they are offroad.

I arranged to meet Dougal at Oakley for a ride around Leigh Hill. If you’ve never been, I would recommend a trip. Loads of trails and loads of riders, so be warned…. it gets crowded in the summer.

So, 2 miles from the car park to the top. Is that all…. well, 2 miles straight up! It certainly felt like it. Going up was a challenge but I mostly made it. Walked that last bit offroad trail upto the tower (I admit this now). After a 5 minute breather and views of the Surrey countryside, we head off for a long loop. We aimed for around 20 miles, but it totalled about 10 miles in the end. However, it was all offroad and some was quite technical which was good.

The ride back down was a thrill ride…. however, I maxed out at 58Km/h (on my chunky tyres too) and this was freewheeling so that shows the steepness of the climb….ouch.

Maybe I’ll drive up to the Coldharbour carpark next time….. maybe not. We’ll have to see!

50Km ride – COMPLETED!

OK, so whoever thought entering the NPSCC 50Km offroad ride in July would be a good idea… well, I want to meet that person in a dark alley!

I turned up and was immediately concerned about the undertaking. Through sheer luck, I started on the front row and we were off. 9:40am start.

Foolishly I decided to keep pace with the lead pack so I could get away from the 500 people behind me… Did I say foolish… I meant down right stupid!

The pack turned out to be 3 guys who obviously did this sort of thing for fun as they soon sped ahead. Leaving me with 3 other guys who, whilst fast, didn’t look like they would be able to keep up the pace for long. I’ll stick with them, I thought.

I was wrong about the pace. After 10km we were still shooting along the footpath in top gear and my legs were starting to feel a bit tired.

Luckily, their legs were getting more tired so they were slowing. Again, in a flush of foolish bravado, I kept up the pace and went past them.  I was now officially 4th with 12km gone.

Now we moved onto the road section and I slowed up a fair bit. So much so that a number of people overtook me. One was about 6 months old and wearing heavy jeans and dancing shoes! Slightly deflated, and now on the ‘up hill section’. Ouch, my legs were really hurting by 20Km marker.  A short snack bar and luckily we were back onto level-ish road.

Moving into the woods (or was it mud… it had rained heavily the past few days) and I was into my element. Powering through the mud sections I was really enjoying the ride by now. I forgot my legs, the pain and the miles still to go and I was loving it.

At 35km-ish a waterstop. I decided to stop, and I probably should not have. However, the lady suggested that very few 50Km riders had passed so that gave me a boost of energy.

Pushing on and another 5Km of road which was actually easy at this stage.

The final 5Km was back on the footpath and I was surprised that it had an uphill climb! My legs were refusing to participate but, push by push I made it to the finish.

Very pleased with the time (2 hours 56 mins) and I am now more confident that I can do it. More challenges to come…. Bring it on!
